The very word "Cancer" sends chills through unwanted abnormal growth of cells in different organs and tissues of the body. Cancer can occur in any organ and in any part of the body, The natural course of many of these cancers, is associated with high degree of morbidity in the patients, hence the fear. However, research during the pastfew years has enabled us to know the causes of some of the commonly occurring cancers and detect them at an early stage and help the patients in salvaging the disease and improve the quality and longevity of life. The mental make-up and will power of the patient and determination to face the disease courageously will go a long way in combating this condition, at individual level. A proper education, early diagnosis and management are of paramount importance in dealing with this dreaded disease.

CAUSES

Causes of cancer are many, known and unknown. Among the known causes
are constant irritation due to irritant food, smoking cigarettes or consumption tobacco in any form, consumption of alcohol, drugs and pollutants in the air, water' and food etc. One of the reasons in the rise of cancer cases has been the rising use of chemical technologies for the past 50 years. This is the price we are paying for the rapid industrialization. Recent works in the field suggest that there is link between cancer and organochlorines, which is extensively used in the chemical industry. Most of the pharmaceuticals require chlorine at some stage of their manufacture. Aromatic hydrocarbons and birth control pills have a similar effect.

PREVENTION

Role of diet, vitamins and antioxidants like fruits and vegetables go a long way in the prevention of cancer. Smoking, especially cigarettes should be stopped. Application of chemicals to the skin should be avoided. All sources of chronic irritation, such as broken stumps of teeth should be removed. Excess of alcohol should be avoided. Non- smokers should avoid passive smoking. Vegetarian food is beneficial to the patients. It may be reiterated that long- term toxic or carcinogenic effects of chemicals are not fully known. It is advisable to avoid all unnecessary contact with chemicals.

ROLE OF HOMEOPATHY

The role of homeopathic medicine in the treatment of cancer is on the
rise. The medicines are not invasive in nature and the patients are treated in holistic concept. There are records which, show cases treated which have not relapsed. Since the disease is chronic in nature and the symptoms take years to manifest it becomes too late for total cure of the disease. Yet, homeopathy is able to complement the allopathic treatment and improve the standard of life of the patients in as far as reducing the pain and sufferings.
